What kind of game is Sonic 3D Blast?
Sonic 3D Blast is a bright and lively platform game from the Sonic the Hedgehog triumvirate, that was released in 1996 for the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn. Unusually, in this game, Sonic carries out his adventures from an isometric view using 3D-inspired sprites, an innovative take on the classic play style. Players glide alongside Sonic as he saves Flickies, colorful birds trapped away by an evil Doctor Robotnik. Yet, the trademark blend of old Sonic bits and the fresh 3D innovation that Sonic 3D Blast offers is what really makes it stand out so much in the series.
How to Play
Sonic 3D Blast sees players taking control of Sonic through many chaotic zones, each consisting of three acts. Classic Sonic moves are still here: jump, attack (or spin), and spin-dash. Rings protect you, but you must grab some to ensure Sonic will survive. You melt TV monitors in a good old Smash Bros. fashion, granting you elemental shields, speed boosts, and temporary invincibility.
The first and second acts of each zone deal mostly with liberating Flickies from robots and gathering them to proceed. Each Flicky behavior varies depending on the color, making the gameplay more interesting. The third act of each zone is a boss fight with Robotnik, which will require Sonic to out-smart and outrun him to win.
Finding friendlies, Tails or Knuckles, with a minimum of 50 rings unlocks special stages. These stages twist the perspective while challenging the player to collect rings and dodge obstacles to earn Chaos Emeralds.
Tips & Tricks
- Ring Strategy: Never lose focus on your rings; losing them can mean losing your progress. Make sure you hold on to them if there's something tough ahead.
- Power-up Options: Use power-ups wisely. Elemental shields should be brought out for boss fights, speed boosts for traversing long stages really fast.
- Flicky Behavior: Get to know the patterns for each Flicky color. Some disperse very fast; others tend to stick close to you.
- Special stages: During special stages, work on collecting rings first rather than chasing the Chaos Emeralds. Dodging obstacles may prove tough, so stay safe and collect rings first.
