What is Sonic Advance?
A vibrant-fast-paced entertainment of platforming gave "Sonic Advance" a great lift for a handheld Sonic game. Being developed by Dimps and Sonic Team and released by Sega in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance, the game marked the comeback of glorious 2D platforming that the fans had once adored on Sega Genesis. Sonic and the gang-everyone from Tails, Knuckles to Amy-are in a race against time to thwart Dr. Eggman's new evil plans, bringing the same allure of speed thrill and excitement that turned Sonic into a legend.
How to Play
In "Sonic Advance," you play as one of the four characters, each having different skills. Sonic the Hedgehog can spin and dash at one hundred miles an hour. Tails is a happy-go-lucky fox with two tails; he can take flight to access places high up or simply to explore different routes. Knuckles the Echidna is the strong and daring protector of the Master Emerald; he can climb walls and shatter certain obstacles. Amy Rose is forever cheerful and determined, wielding her hammer to overcome enemies and obstacles in her way.
Side-scrolling platformer movement consists of legging it across colorful stages filled with enemies, obstacles, and goodies; running, jumping, and spinning. A good run through the stage will see you clock as fast as possible onto the record; after accumulating as many rings as possible, lay the big smackdown on Dr. Eggman! The game will also allow you and a friend to race two players side-by-side on the same screen.
Tips & Tricks
- Master the Spin Attack: The spin attack can be used against some enemies and to break some objects. Timing really is crucial in its application.
- Ring-Magging: Rings share life with you. If you have at least one ring, your character remains invincible from getting hit by an enemy. Once you have zero rings, a hit lets you lose a life!
- Character Special Actions: Practice the unique special actions of all characters to discover which works best with your playstyle. Tails can reach hidden areas with his flying; Knuckles will climb those tricky segments; Amy's hammer comes in handy to break obstructions in your way.
- Plan Your Runs: Some levels have secret exits and shortcuts. Take your time to discover them; it'll shave a few seconds off your clear times.
