What is Sonic Advance?

Sonic Advance is a 2-Dimensional platform game set on the Nintendo handheld system with speedy little touches of the blue hedgehog Sonic. The game was separately developed and produced after Sega's console division had closed. Thus, it is a 2-D platform game reminiscent of the classic Sonic gameplay but with a modern interpretation of actual gameplay techniques, story elements, and levels. It has distinguished itself in the Sonic series for its high-speed action, colorful graphics, and creative level design, and it even helped to create what would be an entirely new franchise on Nintendo systems.

How to Play

Controlling Sonic, you race through various levels, rings to collect, enemies to defeat, and abilities to unlock in Sonic Advance. Fast and fluid gameplay require precision jumps and attacks to properly time Sonic's spin attack to take out enemies. Rarefied loops, springs, hidden places, and secrets encourage exploring and replaying levels.

Tips & Tricks

Collect as many rings as you can: Rings serve a protective function against enemies and death: getting hit while holding rings just knocks away your rings; you don't actually die.
Learn to use the spin attack: Defeating enemies or destroying specific objects may depend on using this well. Timing is everything.
Don't skip exploring every corner: Levels are often equipped with secret springs, bonus stages, and extra lives that can be a big help.
Get good at jumping: This game's challenge is based on precision. Time your jump well, and you'll breeze through some tough parts with little effort.

History

Sonic Advance was independently developed by Sonic Team after the shutdown of Sega's console division. Being the first Sonic game on a Nintendo system, it was hugely successful and spawned several sequels on Nintendo handheld systems. The return to the old school 2-D platforming resonated with fans and proved Sonic's capability across platforms.
