What is Sonic & Knuckles?

Developed by Sega in 1994, Sonic & Knuckles is that famous platforming adventure sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game thrusts players into a lush, colorful forest filled with mushrooms... and secrets. Our favorite blue hedgehog is thrown into a fierce rivalry with the mother of all guardians-cum-villains, Knuckles the Echidna, for the prized Master Emerald. Sonic has to wander through this detailed and beautiful world of his own--half trying to outsmart Robotnik and half to find any kind of secrets. But the fun doesn't stop with that; once Sonic has found all seven crystals, the real fun starts with one epic showdown against Knuckles himself to confront the ultimate enemy: the final boss. It's a world where speed, platforming, and puzzle-solving intertwine into a difficult yet rewarding experience.

How to Play

Sonic & Knuckles is about getting through levels and being precise while moving fast. The following is a rundown:

MOVE: Move around with the D-pad through levels, collecting rings and power-ups along the way.
JUMP: Press the jump button to leap across obstacles, on platforms, or into special zones.
Spin Attack: Hold the jump button, press the attack button, and watch Sonic do a spin attack, knocking back foes.
Special Moves: Become Super Sonic by collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds, gain speed, and more power.
Knuckles Mode: If you have the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cartridge, switch to Knuckles' view, where you'll control the Echidna as he solves puzzles and battles enemies.

History

Sonic & Knuckles is a 1994 release, regarded both as a separate release and as a pack-in until the Sega Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It was designed by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara, who had designed the original Sonic titles.
