What is Sonic Wings (Japan)?

Sonic Wings, known as Sonic Wings Special outside Japan, is an exciting vertical scrolling shooter created by Sega in 1992. This game forms a part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and pushes up high-speed dredging through multiple futuristic stages and numerous enemies, bosses, and power-ups, coming up with a complete arcade experience with the iconic Sonic flair combined with space shooting thrills.

Playing

In Sonic Wings, players select and control one of the four characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy, each bringing its own set of power-ups. The gameplay is simple: you fly your aircraft between levels, shooting down enemies, and picking up power-ups. At the end of each stage, the player has to eliminate the final boss to continue through the stages. The controls are straightforward; you can move, shoot, and perform a few special moves. The gameplay is infamously fast-paced and fairly challenging.

Tips & Tricks

Pick the Right Character: Every character has his own gimmicks. Sonic is speedy and nimble; Tails carries a special wind attack; Knuckles can fly for a short while; and Amy is slow but has a really good charge shot.

Developed in 1992 for the Sega arcade system, Sonic Wings underwent multiple ports to various consoles. Sonic Wings was one of the first games to contain Sonic characters in a non-platform setting.
